Ingredients For Mashed Green Gram Dal Recipe :
  • green gram dal(split :     1 cup
  • water :     3 cups
  • lemon-sized piece o :     1
  • hot water :     1 cup
  • green chillies (chi :     6
  • ground turmeric :     1/2 teaspoon
  • small bunch of coria :     1
  • ghee :     2 teaspoon
  • brown mustard seeds :     1 teaspoon
  • red chili ( chili p :     1
  • asafetida powder :     1/2 teaspoon
  • A few curry leaves :    

Preparation Method for Mashed Green Gram Dal Recipe :

  • Wash the green gram dal well. Drain. Place dal in a heavy saucepan. Cover with 3 cups water and bring to the boil.When boiling, cover pan with a lid, leaving slightly ajar. Lower heat, and simmer dal gently for 1 1/2 hours. Stir several times during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Set dal aside without draining.
  • Soak the tamarind in 1 cup hot water of 15 minutes. Strain the tamarind water into another container, squeezing as much liquid as possible out of the tamarind pulp. Discard pulp. Set the juice aside.
  • Tempering: Heat 2 teaspoons ghee in a heavy saucepan. Add the mustard seeds, halved red chilli, asafetida powder, and a few curry leaves.
  • When the mustard seeds splutter, add the green chillies, tamarind juice, ground turmeric, and salt to taste. Simmer until the raw smell of the tamarind disappears.
  • Now add the undrained cooked dal. Simmer mixture until thoroughly blended
  • Garnish with the finely chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice or chapattis
