Bhapa Ilish Recipe

Bhapa Ilish is a popular Bengali dish in Kolkata. It is a tasty fish preparation which is made from Hilsa fish called Ilish in Bengali.

SERVES : 4

INGREDIENTS :

  • Hilsa (ilish) 1 kilogram
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon
  • Yellow mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
 

 

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
  • Green chillies 2-3
  • Ginger 1 inch piece
  • Mustard oil 3 tablespoons

 

METHOD

  • Clean and wash the fish thoroughly.
  • Cut in required shapes and sprinkle salt and turmeric powder(1/2 teaspoon) to it.
  • Grind thoroughly and make paste of yellow mustard seeds, black mustard seeds, green chillies, ginger and salt.
  • In a pressure cooker, add three cups of water and place a ring in it.
  • Now, in a pan place the fish and put it on the ring in the pressure cooker.
  • Mix remaining turmeric powder to prepared paste and apply thoroughly on fish.
  • Pour a little mustard oil on top.
  • Close the lid of cooker and steam it for eight to ten minutes.
  • Serve hot.
